A bit of consideration should be made when deciding to purchase a new school bus. At the top of the list is price. On average, you will pay $85,000 to $130,000 for a new school bus large enough to transport 66 – 72 passengers. A new bus that will carry 14 -32 passengers will run from $45,000 to $60,000. The bus may have to be ordered, especially if you have certain specifications, which will result in having to possibly wait months to take possession.
A new bus might not require repairs or tires as soon as a used bus will, but you will not be putting as much money into the purchase up front if you buy used. And it will be available to use fairly quickly. A 66-72 passenger refurbished bus will be priced on average from $22,000 to $45,000 and a 14 passenger refurbished bus will be priced on average $15,000 to $30,000 – literally half of what a new bus would cost. Refurbished means that the bus has been taken into a shop, checked over from top to bottom, and repairs made as needed, including mechanical and cosmetic. As-is buses are priced much less. The price will vary according to the options that are on the bus; luggage racks, cruise control, radio/PA system, air conditioning. Of course these options will also add to the cost of a new bus.
If you have the budget for a new bus and know that you will use it for many years, this could be an option for you. If new is not in your budget, purchasing a refurbished bus might be a better option.
