The area surrounding a school bus is called the Danger Zone. The Danger Zone is the area extending ten feet in all directions from the school bus in which serious student injuries and deaths occur.
National loading and unloading fatality statistics are collected annually. According to newly released data, four students were killed in school bus danger zones in the U.S. during the 2014-15 school year. That total is the lowest in the 45 years on record. Previously, the lowest on record was five fatalities in the 2007-08 school year. The annual average over the past 10 years has been ten student deaths in the school bus danger zone.
In the 2014-15 school year, three students were killed by vehicles passing the bus and one was killed when he stepped off the road and then back on and was struck by the back tires of the bus.
The statistics are better, but will not be great until we can say that zero fatalities occured whitin the school year.
