Last month we talked about drivers ignoring the flashing lights on school buses and not stopping. The City of Atlanta is one area that has come up with a way to catch vehicles that illegally pass a stopped school bus.
Stop-arm running has been a significant problem in the Atlanta area as well as throughout Georgia. in 2013, Atlanta and three other districts in the area – DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett – tallied 3,359 drivers illegally passing stopped school buses in one day! At least one Georgia student has been struck and killed by a vehicle passing a school bus in each of the past five school years on record.
Atlanta is installing cameras on the stop-arms to video the vehicle as it illegally passes the bus and help the city police department review and confirm video of offenses and issue citations. As a result, at least a dozen other Georgia school districts have launched stop-arm camera programs.
This a great step in the right direction to observe and fine offenders and keep our children safe.
