With the new school year starting all over the country, it’s a good time to review when you have to stop for a school bus that has stopped to pick up or drop off students. Here are diagrams and explanations of different lanes.
On a two lane road, vehicles following the school bus and vehicles coming from the opposite direction must stop when the bus has stopped and has displayed the stop sign and has their lights flashing.
On a four lane road, the vehicles in both lanes following the school bus must stop when the bus stops. No passing! The approaching two lanes of traffic do not have to stop, but it’s always a good thing to slow down.
Fines are hefty – local laws state that the first offense is $500 and six points off your driver’s license. Second offense is $2000 and six points off your license.
